PERIODONTICS

Periodontics is a branch of the medical-surgical dental specialty that studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the tissues that support the dental organs (gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum and alveolar bone) and the implanted substitutes, for the maintenance of the health, function and aesthetics of the teeth and their adjacent tissues.

Periodontology is the contemporary specialty that emerges from dentistry-stomatology to support the study of scientific evidence on the state of healthy and diseased periodontium. The main periodontal diseases that affect teeth are periodontitis and gingivitis.

Nowadays, with the advent of implantology, periodontics is also responsible for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases such as peri-implantitis.

Periodontal disease manifests itself as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum without affecting the bone) or periodontitis , where the destruction of the bone that supports the tooth occurs. If not treated in time it can cause tooth loss.

A periodontal treatment consists of the correction of the hygiene technique to control bacterial plaque, to the elimination of its triggering factors (dental calculus or tartar and periodontal pockets). Also including hard and soft tissue regeneration techniques. .
